Gorilla Permit fees
Gorilla trekking fees is mandatory for anyone to be allowed to trek the endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. And to be secure, it’s advised to book these gorilla permits early enough before the dates of trekking at least 3-5 months before you set up your safari and this applies to both countries. A gorilla permit in Rwanda costs $ 1500 per person per tracking and this includes the park entry fee as well as the ranger guides fee. Gorilla permits in Rwanda are issued at the Rwanda Tourism Board Offices (ORTPN) which is found in Kigali (close to volcanoes national park). However in Uganda gorilla permits are sold at a fee of $ 700 per person per trekking, the fees also includes park entry and ranger guides. Uganda gorilla permits are bought at the Uganda wildlife Authority headquarters (UWA) in Kampala. In relation to this, gorilla permits of Rwanda are more expensive compared to gorilla permits of Uganda. If you track in Uganda you end up saving about $800 and you will use the rest of the money to track the chimpanzees within Kibale National Park and or wildlife viewing in Queen Elizabeth N.P
Gorilla Family allocation and Travel Time and distance to mountain
In terms of gorilla allocation, Rwanda gorilla families and permits are allocated basing on health, age, interest and physical fitness of a tourist and this is made clear on the day of briefing before the gorilla tracking commences. For those who are adventurous and physically fit are assigned to hard gorilla families and those who are weak, old, less fit are given easy to find gorilla families and those particularly close. However, this is not the case in Uganda, Gorilla permits are sold on first came first serve basis without considering the age, health and fitness along with other essential variables. So in this analysis, gorilla tracking in Rwanda is more flexible than in Uganda.
Surveillance and Photography
Gorillas of Rwanda can be seen easily and photography is clear compared to gorillas of Uganda which live in the impenetrable forest of bwindi. Rwanda’s volcanoes national park gorillas are found in the bamboo forests and short grass that has made it better when it comes to viewing plus photography. The impenetrable bwindi forest of Uganda has tall grass most of the time making photography and visibility not clear at all because of the tall grass. However in some gorilla families like Nshongi family within Rushegura, among other have better views for gorillas.
In terms of accommodation, Uganda is far much better compared to Rwanda. There are very many options for accommodation in Bwindi and Mgahinga gorilla parks from all budget compared to Rwanda. Uganda has several accommodations within the four sectors including Rushaga, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Buhoma. In each trail you can still find at least 4 up market accommodations and also other alternatives to mention some lodges in bwindi ranging from budget, midrange and luxury accommodation, it’s you to advise us about your travel style. Some of the upmarket accommodations in Bwindi impenetrable national park include Buhoma Lodge/ Mahogany Lodge/ Chameleon Hill Lodge/ Lake Mutanda Resort (mid-range) Engagi Lodge/ Silverback Lodge / Gorilla Safari Lodge/ Gorilla Resort Bwindi/ Gorilla Mist Camp, (budget) Ruhija Gorilla Friends Camp or Travelers Rest Hotel, Gorilla Valley Lodge or Buhoma Community Campground these are just a few but there are still more good and beautiful lodges within and outside the park. Whereas Rwanda has few lodges within and outside the park when compared to Uganda. There a number of lodges however only one sticks out and that’s Virunga Lodge that is usually full and costly, others lodges include one and only, Sabyinya Silverback Lodge, Gorilla nest Lodge, Le Bombou Lodge and Kinigi Guest House and many have been not mentioned.
